Summary

Long ago, the gods granted a few special animals great powers。。。 but not all those animals used their magical abilities for good! Senzou the Fox Spirit in particular grew too brash and arrogant, abusing his strength until the gods imprisoned him for his bad behavior。 Three hundred years later, he's finally been released, but only on one condition-- he can't have his any of his abilities back until he successfully helps a tanuki cub named Manpachi become an assistant to the gods。 Unfortunately for Senzou, there's no cheating when it comes to completing his task! The magic beads around his neck make sure he can't wander too far from his charge or shirk his duties, and so。。。 Senzou the once-great Fox Spirit must now figure out how to be an actually-great babysitter to a mischievous little tanuki or risk being stuck without his powers forever!

This is pretty cute。 The tanuki is super adorable (even is slightly disneyfied)。 I feel like little Manpachi is going to do big things。。。 Not sure if will continue with the series but we'll see what happens。 This is pretty cute。 The tanuki is super adorable (even is slightly disneyfied)。 I feel like little Manpachi is going to do big things。。。 Not sure if will continue with the series but we'll see what happens。 。。。more

Listen。 This had all the makings of stories I usually love: You got a surly MC who has to protect someone/thing cute and innocent, a super adorable art style, and a family-friendly story with none of the usual ills of manga。 But this just wasn’t hitting for me。If the library orders volume 2, I’ll probably take a look, but on my own, I’m not too interested in reading more。[rating from enjoyment]

This was just beyond cute! The way the chatacters were drawn reminded me a bit of classic Disney design (especially the wolves and Manpachi)。 Will definitley be reading (and buying) the next volume。

The Fox & Little Tanuki is a charming and entertaining manga debut filled with so much heart, following an evil fox spirit whose been awakened by the sun goddess and given another chance, which means raising a cute tanuki to be a servant to the gods!! The fast-pace, great artwork, and compelling story steeped in Japanese mythology make this a fantastic manga series worth checking out! What first drew me to this manga was the beautiful cover and once learning more about the summary, I knew I had to read it! I actually started this one last year, but never got back to it but what really sticks with you is how the various character's personalities (Senzou and Panpachi's especially) just bleed through the page。 I just had to learn more about them and finish up this first volume and now I am OBSESSED wow this was so good!!Senzou, an evil fox, has been asleep for 300 years only to be awakened with his powers gone, he must now take care of a little tanuki and raise it to be a servant of the gods。 To ensure he's on track, a pearl necklace has been placed on him to inflict him with the pain he caused in his past life。 Whether he's too far from the tanuki, tries to avoid the goddess's orders or tries to harm others, the pearls will bring pain。This first volume is not only an introduction to the otherworld, but also features a quest and introduces us to a cast of characters sure to be present in future volumes。The Fox & Little Tanuki is steeped in Japanese folklore and mythology。 There's various bakemono we are introduced to, which are yokai in the form of animals that trek around the otherworld which looks to be sprawling with nature, forests, etc。 I loved learning about the different bakemono, spirit dos, wolves, etc。 and seeing how they all interact within this world。This is the literal definition of a grumpy x sunshine dynamic that is just so fun to read。 We learn that the tanuki (called Manpuchi) and Senzou have something in common, they were both abandoned at a young age。 Though there's still much mystery surrounding their pasts, I can't wait to see how they bond and grow closer。There's a lot of interwoven messages about family, correcting mistakes, moving on, and allowing oneself to grow/trust that I think are subtly woven into the narrative in such a beautiful way。 Both Manpachi and Senzou are in completely new territory here and they still have a lot to learn about each other, but you can see how these important themes are present in their trials and triumphs throughout the first volume! The artwork is very crisp and reads almost like an anime adaptation, it's so immersive, fast-paced, and very detailed when it comes to the characters。 The artwork is incredibly expressive where you can even see all those subtle emotional moments from the cast as the story progresses。 The covers especially are like works of art, done in such a beautiful watercolor style!I think however, despite the great pacing and interesting story, there's just a lot of the world that's just rushed into a bit too quickly。 The story is an absolute page-turner, but there's just a lot about the world and mythology that it can be a it overwhelming at first with how fast the pacing is, but the further you get into the story it's an absolute treat start to finish。The Fox & Tanuki Vol。 1 is a wonderful manga series you should definitely check out! 。。。more

Some familiar themes here but not a lot of interesting manga comes out for kids, and this is accessible and complex enough to have a lot of appeal to new manga readers。 And that Tanuki is damn cute。

Solid story。 The illustration style changes are a little jarring, and the main style is。。。 overly cutesy? Worth keeping up with。

So I'm reading this, and it's cute and adorable and fluffy like cotton candy, really sweet, y'know? But then there's all these feels going on too, the ones that clutch your heart and make you all teary eyed, so this isn't just a piece of warm fuzzy, it brings the heartache and the happy cry too。 And the art is sooooo pretty! The characters are really good, they feel real and complex and not one-dimensional at all。 But ahhhhhhh! Super adorable! Senzou, a fox spirit who has been locked away for 300 years, is tasked with looking after a magically gifted raccoon cub。 I love the Japanese mythology in this manga; I've heard of kitsune like Senzou but didn't realize there are so many different spirit creatures! The drawing style is adorable and I squee-ed practically every page。This book is rated all ages。 Due to the language complexity, I will probably recommend it to middle grade readers and up。 Super adorable! Short review, in two words: Extremely cute! Longer review: Okay, so the story is about animal spirits, bakemono, that live alongside the human realm, and are typically shunned by their families at a young age, and often abandoned。 Senzou, a black kitsune, was quite infamous, and was punished with a 300 year sleep by the sun goddess, and now has been awakened for the next stage of his punishment - having to take care of a young tanuki, who he names Manpachi。 He is to raise him to be 'a servant of Short review, in two words: Extremely cute! The dynamic of a grumpy ex-evil fox taking care of a cute tanuki kid is just too adorable。 He complains about having a kid as a tag-along but his actions show how much he cares for the kid, and softens as the story goes on。 And they both are living with a kitsune who loves to cook (she changes to human form for that)。 Still, Senzou finds the concept of family false, and is quite aggressive when it comes up。 He also has a lot of resentment against the gods, and the bakemono who serve them。 Manpachi, meanwhile, is an adorable baby, who clings to Senzou, and loves him。 They both also have an unexpected bond, in that Senzou's ability to use magic is tied to Manpachi, who himself is a powerful user。 In this volume, they take on their first case - helping a zashiki-warashi recover something lost。 Later, as Manpachi is missing his family and after getting scolded by Senzou for remembering the family that abandoned him, comes across an old acquaintance of Senzou's。 While it also has themes of child abandonment, and death, as well as the sad sides of the relationships between ayakashi and humans, the tone of the book tends more towards humor。 Tachibana especially is a delight! The character design is also excellent, with cute animal designs and cute anthropomorphic designs as well。 Overall, it is interesting, cute and I can't wait for more! 。。。more

Mi Tagawa's "The Fox & Little Tanuki" is a cute story, but can it prove to be more than just a predictable Disney-styled storyline? The story revolves around Bakemono。 These are spirits from Japanese folklore that have supernatural abilities and work for gods。 Senzou the fox is a spirit that refuses to work for them and spends his lifetime committing evil deeds and not bowing to anyone。 Once he's finally caught, he's released after 300 years, without his powers and with the task of taking care of Mi Tagawa's "The Fox & Little Tanuki" is a cute story, but can it prove to be more than just a predictable Disney-styled storyline? The story revolves around Bakemono。 These are spirits from Japanese folklore that have supernatural abilities and work for gods。 Senzou the fox is a spirit that refuses to work for them and spends his lifetime committing evil deeds and not bowing to anyone。 Once he's finally caught, he's released after 300 years, without his powers and with the task of taking care of a Tanuki, until it becomes strong enough to become a servant of the gods。The relationship between the two characters is very formulaic and common - the Tanuki is cute and wants to be friends with the fox, who is always annoyed and doesn't want to involve itself with positivity。 Even though this is only the first volume, it's already clear that at some point the story will take a turn, which will end with the Fox becoming good-natured。However, this manga does have more going for it than just that。 While the story is completely fantasy, it does borrow a lot from Japanese mythology, which works as an interesting setting for the world and a lesson on Japanese culture and folklore。The art is clean and aesthetically pleasing。 Even when drawing animals, Tagawa manages to make them full of emotion, with clear expressions。"The Fox & Little Tanuki" isn't anything new or innovative, however, it's an easy read for all ages and it manages to stay interesting with the mythology aspect。 The story isn't episodic either, so it's interesting to follow and see if Tagawa manages to make an overly simple story work in a non-episodic format。 。。。more

The art style in this is just freaking adorable, with a nice blend of cute and mythical。 The protagonists are animals with powers, so they sometimes take human form and they often use magic。 I enjoyed the art in this and the nice juxtaposition between this adorable, sweet Tanuki and the cold, darker world that it will probably one day discover。- I wasn’t sure what to expect going in, and while this is funny, it also tugs on the heart strings。 The little Tanuki was left behind and is, for all intents and purposes, an orphan, as is the fate for every magical creature like him。 And you know what? He has the nerve to not even get mad about it。 Partly because he doesn’t understand and partly because he’s just such a pure soul, and I just want to hug him and protect him。- This has so many of my favorite tropes! There’s a cranky evil-doer who finds himself in an inconvenient and detestable position with no choice but to obey … and found family! And magic! And mythology and lore and really, just all sorts of good stuff。 This manga has a warm, fuzzy found-family feel mixed with an episodic, questy vibe。- This was so short that it felt like the story was just getting going by the time this ended。 Which, I suppose, is kind of the nature of this format, since it’s just Volume 1。 This is why I tend to read combined volumes, because really, this is just a taste, a little sample of what will be the overall story。 Was I interested? Yeah。 But will I remember it by the time the next volume comes out? Eh, probably not, which is unfortunate。 。。。more
